Where the Wild Things Are Reviews and Ratings

This boy goes to this dream like island where the monsters there help him understand his own feelings.

The Wild Things and their world are perfectly realized. There are twenty or so aimless minutes after Max first gets to their land that had me fearing this would be the only real point of praise; but the movie pulls out of this funk and becomes quite wonderful. They say the Osca...( read more)rs next year will have ten Best Picture nominations rather than five. Counting this, there are now five I've seen this year that deserve it: glad to know there's room for more.

I don?t think I ever read this as a kid. The movie seemed ok considering I?ve heard there?s only 10 pages (I think) in the book! Was filled in well, I guess.
I really can?t give a complete review or grade but from what I saw its average however... the costumes (?) are quite c...( read more)ool. Or maybe even awesome! They look (as far as I remember of seeing the book cover) Carol (I think) looks just like the cover of the book. Although I thought I?ve seen him w/ a toothy grin if I?ve leafed through the book. Otherwise I really didn?t care for the movie & really not sure how this would be a movie for the kids of age for the book. I don?t recall curses maybe one but I could have herd wrong. Also like I said its also dark but I guess with the movie you can teach how not to judge people & teach how to HELP better (& not lie) etc. To me, if they are not at least in grade school, then maybe shouldn?t be watching movie. Parents discression. C (for what part of the movie I saw)

i loved this book as a kid.

Immediately bolsters itself as one of the greatest children's movies ever made, if you want to consider it a kids' movie. This film is too complex for little ones, as it delves deeply into the human psyche, brandishing richly constructed themes and deeply engrained symbolism. Thi...( read more)s is easily one of the best films of the year, and is deserving of many awards, including best director and best score. Spike Jonze has really hit one out of the park here.

It was very interesting, but not what I thought. I liked it, and loved how the characters were realistic to the book.
  • November 20, 2009
I loved this movie. It was so cute and so funny. Beautifully acted and directed. A definite must see!

Cannot wait to see this film.

A part of my childhood, brought to life in film! What an adventure!

i dont know that ive ever been so disappointed in a movie that i liked so much. this is truly a great film, with stunning art direction and cinematography and a solid performance from a young max records. but the film also felt a bit void of depth despite the deeply emotional a...( read more)nd even depressing disposition of the wild things. the entire time i felt the film nearing that point of revelation that would blow me away, but it never came. a really good movie that has its special place among unique films, but the film never capitalized on what should have been a film filled with more joy.
  • November 17, 2009
I did not find the characters to be likeable. Over all it just left me feeling weird.
  • November 17, 2009
This movie should have been called where the emo monsters are. If the island had razor blades on it the monsters would kill themselves. Some cool visuals held my attention but the film itself was nothing close to what it could have been. Don't believe the critics, this movie su...( read more)cks, and I loved the book.

"In my review of Where the Wild Things Are (a movie I pretty much hated), I talked about how perplexed I was that anyone could love such a muddled mess of a movie. "Appreciate" it for the visuals and for being "different"? Sure. But "love" it? That's hard for me to wrap my head a...( read more)round.

And yet some critics are rhapsodizing. It's currently at 67% on RottenTomatoes.com (which I think is actually pretty bad given that this is the kind of film critics love to love: an edgy, esoteric film adaptation of a beloved children's book by a wildly acclaimed "auteur" director).

Then I remind myself how subjective art always is. If, as a writer, I'm ever discouraged by a bad review of something I've personally written, I console myself by going to Amazon.com and reading the user reviews - and seeing that every book ever written, no matter how beloved, has someone who thinks it's a piece of s***. Don't believe me? Go look. Someone calls The Hobbit, for example, "the worst book ever written."

    People are different, that's all.

Some writers approach the craft of writing from a love of words and language. Some filmmakers, meanwhile, see making movies as being about the manipulation of images and visuals.

My approach, on the other hand, has always been that words (in books) and visuals (in movies) are merely tools that artists use to tell a story. For me, story (and character, which should be an expression of story, and vice-versa) is everything. If there's no story, there's no point, at least in a full-length work.

But for many writers and filmmakers, "story" is an afterthought, at best. That's how Where the Wild Things Are seemed to me. It was almost solely about the visuals, and the director's esoteric "point."

Worse, some people confuse "structure" and "dramatic conflict" with "formula" and "cliche," but they're very different things. I hate formula, but I love structure. In fact, I think a well-crafted dramatic structure - where the ending is inevitable, yet completely unexpected - is one of the most beautiful things a human being can ever create."

As a fan of the book from my growing up, I could not have asked for a better adaptation of this beloved tale. Highly recommended. Definitely one of the best of 2009.

I'm undecided about this one. I enthusiastically enjoyed the opening scene and, well, everything leading up to his first encounter with the Wild Things, but then I got bored. I've refrained from saying that B word, because people on the other side who absolutely loved this film...( read more) seem to get enraged by it. They say we don't understand the film... You're wrong. I get it. I know the Wild Things are like Max and his relationship. I can relate with it. I felt the way he felt as a child, and as a boy specifically! I love Spike Jonze and I appreciate that Sendak gave him full creative license with his short kids story. I personally just wasn't extremely interested in his take on it. If anyone were to make this book into a movie I would still say Spike was the best man for the job, but it won't be in my DVD collection until I find it cheap and abandoned at my local used book store. While I did use the B word, I thought many aspects of this movie were beautiful and maybe (maybe) after another viewing I will be as enthralled as others. We'll see. I'm giving it 3 gracious stars.

I want to see this movie so badly! It was my favorite book as a kid!
  • November 14, 2009
The fact that they are making this movie is of tremendous importance to me. I have planned for roughly half my life to make this movie, so if they screw it up I might die, or I might be relieved because I can make a remake. Alternatively if it is awesome I might be like "sweet!" ...( read more)or I might be like "crap!" because then I can't remake it. My life is wrought with dilemmas.

    UPDATE:
    WHAT?!?!?!? WHAT?????? WHAT HAPPENED?????? WHAT?!?!?!?!

Spike Jonze just friggin jumped on the face part of my head, on purpose. What does he think this is, a Terrence Malick movie? THIS IS WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. GET WITH THE PROGRAM. And what the crap Karen O.? Way to drop the ball. I felt like I was watching a transmogrified version of rebel without a cause where everybody gets replaced with monster versions of themselves except James Dean who just gets smaller and trades in his red jacket for pajamas with ears. There's a difference between being childish and being childlike, and there's a difference between being overwhelmed by cruelty and being overwhelmed by every little problem. I don't know exactly how to say it, but the movie was not honest to the experience of being overwhelmed, hurt, or alone, and certainly not to what alternatives a child would create in order to cope. And soft, woeful, background indie rock is not wild, and when you were a kid you did not sit around ruminating lazily... you ruminated hard. Whatever, I'm not trying to tell you how you ruminated when you were a kid, I'm just saying this movie lacked a bassline, had no screaming solos, and hardly even had a riff. I don't really know what a riff is, but this movie sure didn't teach me, did it?

    P.S.
It made me really sad that I couldn't love this movie.

I really enjoyed it. It was pretty good and nothing like the book. This movie was really sad and I don't get how they could make this for kids to watch. I think the biggest disapointment was that it wan't as great as I thought and anticipated it to be. That's not to say it wasn't good; truthfully, it had some truly amazing and wonderful moments! Some truly spellbinding and eye-candy moments! I think the art direction is amazing a...( read more)nd a shoe in for the Oscars! Likewise- the puppets (they were created by Jim Henson's people afterall) are so realistic- I thought they would look fake! They don't! As well, considering it was a very, very short picture book- this is a very, very well written piece! The psycology, the depth of the characters! You could wirite a paper on it! The war scene alone could be a paper! The child logic, the feelings, the foils! It was wonderful. The actors playing the parts and the voices are so spot on perfect! They were great! But then the downside: the story as well is clearly for a Spike Jonze film: its odd, its slightly mobbid and at times not child apropriate. As well the depth may have been more adult than child. And in general, it was a little too odd, a little too strange. It answers the question could the avant-gaurde or the indi become a children's genre- it can; this is it. But it still remains too indi for me. As well, it retains that odd indi soundtrack that sometimes works and sometimes dosen't. It works here, but remains indi. For me, while a good film, a great film in some aspects, as a whole it isn't a great film. But visually and psychologically excellent!

Even with its wonderful actors, production & effects the movie was disappointing, especially for its book fans. The script was so ambitious in its desire to communicate moral and other messages that they were left inconclusive or incomplete in their develoment. The plot is som...( read more)ewhat disorienting and unnecessarily complex, given the simplicity of the message the book it's base on. The series of events presented in the story are so derailed from the text that at times one feels lost and confused and making efforts to connect them. Some scenes are bit violent for my taste. Max is presented as a disturbed child while the book character seemed more like a naturally mischievous kid. The end is disturbingly sad because although Max learns from his experience, it was mostly self-serving and he leaves a world of monsters as sad and dysfunctional as the ones he originally found, having little effect on them. Little closure is given between Max and the "main monster? with which he had identified the most during his journey.

Gorgeously filmed, and packs quite an emotional punch. It perfectly captures the feelings of loneliness and yearning while still being fun and ultimately hopeful. New best line ever? "That was my favorite arm."
