Beau Bridges, Lee Grant, Louis Gossett Jr

At the age of twenty-nine, Elgar Enders "runs away" from home. This running away consists of buying a building in a black ghetto in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. Initially his intention is to ev...( read more  read more... )ict the black tenants and convert it into a posh flat. But Elgar is not one to be bound by yesterday's urges, and soon he has other thoughts on his mind. He's grown fond of the black tenants and particularly of Fanny, the wife of a black radical; he's maybe fallen in love with Lanie, a mulatto girl; he's lost interest in redecorating his home. Joyce, his mother has not relinquished this interest and in one of the film's most hilarious sequences gives her Master Charge card to Marge, a black tenant and appoints her decorator.

Who knew Beau Bridges was a baby face and was kind of adorable when he was a young man? Excellent film about race and class.

One of the first early gigs featuring Louis Gossett,Jr,this movie was Hal Ashby's directorial debut and it became one of the top ten films of 1970 and for a very good reason. The fine cast includes Lee Grant, the great Diana Sands, and also the dramatic debut of the great Pearl Bailey. With some great music from The Staple Singers makes this a joy to watch.

One of the first early films to star Gossett, but not only that, it has the late Diana Sands, who sadly died a few years later of cancer in here as a woman who gets pregnant by her landlord while being with Gossett, and causes a funky brew.
