A hysterical & touching portrait of friendship & teenage adolescene that also an easily entertaining teen comedy.
  • September 30, 2009
This is not bad as typical teen movies go. There are original laughs, great performances (Cera & Mintz-Plasse) and some real hart warming poignant moments.

I hate contemporary American comedy. Fact. So this combination of High School coming of age, gross out comedy and night in hell formulae is the kind of movie I'd usually crawl naked through broken glass to avoid. But it's actually really, really funny! There are loads of hilariou...( read more)s lines, particularly involving Jonah Hill's brilliant tirades against his fellow nerds ("Nobody's had a hand job in cargo shorts since 'Nam!"). I loved the cops as well (look out for the extended "semen" speech on the DVD extras!) and not only is it genuinely witty rather than relying on cheap, dumb "laughs" as most of these films do, it actually has some insightful and heart warming moments towards the end, even more so than the empty celluloid of the likes of Garden State. I don't really think it's got much in the way of re-watch value, but I really wasn't expecting to enjoy this so it was one of the nicest surprises I've had in a while. And the soundtrack is brilliant!

Superbad is a teen movie. It also will draw comparisons to American Pie, in it's "losers try to get laid" themes, and occasional gross-out comedy. But the comparison is unfair - Superbad is a funnier, more subversive and more importantly genuine movie than American Pie or any of ...( read more)it's awful sequels were. The three central characters have a believable, likable relationship, that the film takes time to establish. Cera, Hill (who deserves special praise, for turning what could have been a really unlikeable character into a sweet, if loud-mouthed and crass, teenager) and Mintz-Plasse bounce of each other perfectly. The movie creates some funny situations, and more importantly, hilarious dialogue throughout. Aside from one comedic misfire - an overly long (and poorly judged) gross out sight gag involving a pair of trousers and a dance - Superbad had me laughing constantly. It's sweet, it's funny as hell, and it's established a load of new talent.

Superbad is just a remarkable, hysterical, outragous, teen stoner comedy that depicts the life-style of three boys who come at impossible odds. A-: Great.

It's rare that new movies come out and become favourites of mine. This one did. (Very quotable)

Nigel Andrews, The Financial Times

The film proves only that a Hollywood fixated on the slapstick potential of teenage growing pains is finding it harder than ever to say, "Bye, bye, American Pie". full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

A four-letter raunch-a-rama with a heart. full review

Every generation seems to have one iconic comedy that gets to a special place... and lives on forever as a true classic of its times. For this generation Superbad is going to be that film. full review

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

Even this middle-age hausfrau can appreciate the zonkered comic force behind Superbad, whose rambling plot and profane bull sessions reminded me of Danny Leiner's Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. full review

Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

The writers shoot often and copiously, and they're obviously in love with their ability. Now, if they could just get some sort of focused, confident rhythm going, they might make things more satisfyin... full review

Humiliation, fear and occasional elation are the dominant emotions for these bumbling but oddly likable young men. Side-splitting laughter, along with some powerful cringing, are likely to be audience... full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

The movie doesn't need any superfluous redeeming qualities: Its pleasures and charms lie in its very crudeness, in the way the characters' thoughts begin in their dicks and spill out of their mouths, ... full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Superbad maintains that delicate balance of sweetness, empathy and vulgar comedy. It's so packed with irreverent lowbrow wit that you scarcely notice how it quietly shifts from gross-out jokes to adul... full review

David Edelstein, New York Magazine

Superbad might be the most provocative teen sex comedy ever made; it is certainly one of the most convulsively funny. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

It helps that the fun doesn't stop. It helps even more that the pitch-perfect script doesn't step out of character for a joke. full review

"I think this movie is highly overrated. A movie about a day in life of three dork friends trying to get booze and desperately hoping to get lucky (read: laid). Well the chicks are cute, there are a few I repeat just a few moments which might just pass as funny. Frankly, skip this movie if you're not a big fan of teen comedies because you might not like it."[2]
