The classic tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and -- it would seem -- snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined.

Such a sweet movie, love watching it.

Jane Austen's classic comes to life in a retelling of her beloved "Pride & Prejudice". Joe Wright, with screenwriter Deborah Moggach, took on the impossible task of condensing the material into a two hour timeframe whilst still retaining the heart of the novel. While many purists...( read more) will still favor the six hour version made for British television (starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle), this "remake" should be praised for it's universally inviting and appealing tone. These period dramas tend to be known as masturbatory exercises used to flaunt costume design, reducing every emotion with faithful adaptations of well-mannered pretentiousness, but the characters here beam with enough life to be accessible and even lovable.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennet (Donald Sutherland & Brenda Blethyn) together have five daughters. Mrs. Bennet wishes that each of them will find a rich man capable of supporting and spoiling them, even if it means a complete dismissal of that pesky emotion: love. Mr. Bennet, on the other hand, is much more of a dreamer whose love for his daughters exceeds his wife's financial worries. Later on in the film, when Rev. Collins (Tom Hollander) proposes to Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), one of the Bennet sisters, Mrs. Bennet can hardly contain her excitement whereas Mr. Bennet supports her wish to decline.

Elizabeth is the sassy and strong-willed hero of the picture. The film involves the romance between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), an unlikely suitor considering their less-than-pleasant initial encounter. Eventually, the two are able to see each other for who they really are, despite the roadblocks of family and dramatic misunderstanding, and fall in love. Those familiar with the story will clearly see i'm leaving out atleast a dozen more characters.

Keira Knightley, who was just 19 at the time this was filmed, is remarkable if only for her unmatched charisma and appeal. The actress is able to convey a wide array of emotions with only the slightest facial ticks - her grins can be equal parts devilish and flirtatious, and a slight movement of the brow can turn her from a lightweight pushover to a fierce combatant. Elizabeth, as she is written, is already a remarkable heroic woman, and in the film Knightley is able to retain the feminism while modernizing her with a larger-than-life and highly endearing performance. She does the same thing in "The Duchess", which I preferred to this film. I tend to shudder at the sight of a costume drama, but Knightley brings so much to the genre.

"Pride & Prejudice" is about what you'd expect. It's very well acted and shot, and the choreography is very impressive. That being said, however, it's a story we've seen before and I didn't find myself investing too heavily in the melodrama. It's an enjoyable and breezy watch, however it doesn't leave much of an impression.

A very good movie. I will get ridiculed by my friends but this was well worth the time i spent watching it

could only stomach an hour of it and had to switch it off. all i saw and heard was miserable hoighty-toighty types complaining or planning marriages whilst talking bollocks. it's also the scariest film ever made too due to the raving women running around trying to get married. if...( read more) it wasn't bad enough without her... keira knightley... the worlds shittiest actress... has a lead role playing one of the rich types who i want to rob! my worst nightmare

antique romance? Because it actually is romantic, in a way that's kind
of charming in its absence of contemporary wisecracking worldl... full review

As historically authentic-looking as Pride & Prejudice is, it has far more invested in emotional authenticity -- you feel engaged every moment. full review

Pride & Prejudice satisfies as dreamy romance. It's not the razor-sharp satire that Austen can be, but it's lovely entertainment. full review

Even the most rabid Janeites must allow that director Joe Wright, 33, has given Austen's novel a beguilingly youthful spin without compromising the novel's late-eighteenth-century manners. full review

By far my favorite movie, I absolutely never get bored of it. I find the kind of light that is captured is spectacular although I know how Joe Wright is picky at it's subject.
I loved the window scenes and of course the swing. I still don't get the line "You hands are cold" and it's bugging me profoundly.

The reflective part of the movie is what fascinates me the most, although I must admit I get drifted away by Mr. Darcy very often. The other person I love in this movie is Talulah Riley and I think it is a shame that we don't see her a lot ( even tough we would be missing the point if we were only talking of Mary...) Elizabeth is as exiting as twisted and Bingley is the most perfect creature for the angel Jane.

I have read this story for about five times, but I never get bored of it. Keira Knitley played very well as the role of Elizabeth Bennet, for she makes this movie full of various mixed emotions. I'm not a British, but I enjoy listening the way they speak up their thoughts which is very cool. The story line is great..........and Jane Austen relates some of her experience in life in this superflous story.

Not a great fan of keira knightley, but since the 1995 adaptation was mesmerising and giddy, i just have to see if this will triumph.

the movie is the epitome of evey fairytale i have heard. And yet the diction of the major characters involves you in a pragmatic way. i have watch this movie over and over to discover the reason for this awe and i have not found it cause but have come to a deeper appreciation of the script.

The characters of Jane Austen's classic are extremely underdeveloped. The version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is far better.
If you can forget about what it's suppose to be then the movie is fine.

This is one of the best novel-to-film adaptions I have ever had the pleasure to watch. The music all the way through sets a beautiful tone. Along with the wonderful acting of Keira Knightley as Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and Matthew MacFadyen as the brilliant Mr. Fitswilliam Darcy. You will never say Collin Firth is Mr. Darcy again. Matthew MacFayden captures him, 'body and soul'.

With only slight changes from the novel, the flow and elegance of this love is story is one for the agers.

I recommmend it to anyone who loves a beautiful story of two people drawn together. Also if you love the film I strongly persuade you to read the book.

I just love this movie like all of you and I do agree about the comment when Mr. Darcy flexed his hand after touching Elizabeths hand it's just so romantic and also the look of surprise on her face when he touches her hand. But my favorite scene is when he first tells Elizabeth that he loves her out in that beautiful country side and the rain it's just breathtaking...
