Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport, Johnny Depp

Captain Jack Sparrow is caught up in another tangled web of supernatural intrigue. Although the curse of the Black Pearl has been lifted, an even more terrifying threat looms over its captain and scur...( read more  read more... )vy crew: it turns out that Jack owes a blood debt to the legendary Davy Jones, Ruler of the Ocean Depths, who captains the ghostly Flying Dutchman, which no other ship can match in speed and stealth. Unless the ever-crafty Jack figures a cunning way out of this Faustian pact, he will be cursed to an afterlife of eternal servitude and damnation in the service of Jones. This startling development interrupts the wedding plans of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who once again find themselves thrust into Jack's misadventures, leading to escalating confrontations with sea monsters, very unfriendly islanders, flamboyant soothsayer Tia Dalma and even the mysterious appearance of Will's long-lost father, Bootstrap Bill. Meanwhile, ruthless pirate hunter Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company sets his sights on retrieving the fabled "Dead Man's Chest." According to legend, whoever possesses the Dead Man's Chest gains control of Davy Jones, and Beckett intends to use this awesome power to destroy every last Pirate of the Caribbean once and for all. For times are changing on the high seas, with businessmen and bureaucrats becoming the true pirates--and freewheeling, fun-loving buccaneers like Jack and his crew threatened with extinction.

It's as every bit as fun as the first movie. Swashbuckling action, cliffhanger thrills & excitement, and ingenious humor. Everything you could want in a great Disney movie.

Hollywood and numerous other places in which they make big fat expensive action/adventure thriller type films... are usually very lazy. They usually put in a hell of a lot of money, they may throw in some very good-looking actors, probably some expensive things like muscle cars (...( read more)The Fast and The Furious), some really good looking girls, explosions, bad one-liners, POP CULTURE REFERENCES AND PERHAPS EVEN SOME POINTLESS CAMEO APPEARANCES, bad dialog and a really uninteresting or boring plot... if not no plot at all. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is not one of those films... IT'S A MASTERPIECE!!! I was a huge fan of the original and own it on DVD, actually, all three films. I have watched it many times over. The performance of Johnny Depp earned him an Acadmedy Award nomination and knowing this man I can honestly say right now that he without a doubt the greatest American actor of all time! I mean... sometimes you can hardly tell that its Johnny Depp because he gets to into this character of the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are good in their roles but of course they are overshadowed by Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy. Davy Jones is a complex, dark and very original kind of movie villain and one of the best I have seen in a long time. The plot is very original, the action sequences done extremely well and the loads of money put into such a production hasn't gone to waste... every cent has been put into good use. This is "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" or the modern age... and I am without a doubt not the very first person to say such a thing!

A great sequel to a rather average film. The ending its very impressive and the actors look a little more comfortable in their roles (Apart from Bloom who is as wooden as Pinocchio's knob)
  • July 18, 2009
Slightly better than the third, a good ending and good effects. The Davey Jones crew are spooky and you wanna know more about them. It gets alittle confusing but generally its ok, nothing special though. The first is still leagues ahead.

An absolutely incrediable and spectacular action adventure comedy. Tremendously hilarious and astonishingly action-packed. Better than the first film. It brings the cool and fun and genious of the first. One of the best sequels in recent years. It stands with the Godfather part 2...( read more) and Empire Strikes Back. Johnny Depp is at his best, brining the hilarity, style and flair of the screens most sensational pirate. Non-stop fun that never let's up for an instant. The speacial effects are amazing. It's a two hour adreniline-rush from begining to finish.

Johnny Depp was at his best in this movie. Orlando Bloom played so well off of him. The casting for this movie couldn't be any better.

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

The new plot has all the appeal of a seaweed sandwich, being dark, salty, and indigestible. full review

Spending time with this motley crew is probably the best reason there is to set sail for a multiplex all summer. full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

Calling a summer movie 'action-packed' is supposed to be a compliment, but there's nothing so tedious as nonstop excitement. full review

July 6, 2006
A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Although there are memorable bits and pieces, the new Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie with no particular interest in coherence, economy or feeling.

July 6, 2006
David Edelstein, New York Magazine

The director, Gore Verbinski, has grown more adept at Spielberg-style action, in which the fun is as much in the elegance of the staging as the stunts. full review

July 6, 2006
Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

At two hours and 30 minutes, the story has its repetitive and wearisome passages, and the plot emerges only to bog things down, but for most of its length it positively dances with gusto. full review

July 6, 2006
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

It's the triumphant rogue in Depp that keeps this pirate ship afloat and actually makes the third voyage (coming next summer) a trip worth booking. full review

July 6, 2006
Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

A goofball riff on the pirate-movie genre, this sequel is as insubstantial as popcorn -- and as delicious. full review

July 6, 2006
Claudia Puig, USA Today

It does deliver a combustible combination of ingredients for a summer blockbuster: a cornucopia of action and dazzling effects, some raucous humor and a large dose of Depp's winning charm. full review
