I have been looking forward to this movie for so long. Why? Because I'm a huge fan and have read all the books? No. Because Robert Pattinson is such a fine actor? No. Because I enjoy films starring Shark boy? No. I have been looking with great anticipation because I knew how horr...( read more)ible the movie was going to be. And guess what? I GOT MY WISH!!!

New Moon picks up where Twilight leaves off with Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) having a birthday. Bella is afraid she's getting too old at the ripe, old age of 18 and goes birthday Nazi, except for the bloodsucker birthday hosted by Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison). While at the party Bella gets the worst paper cut in the history of the world, causing the Sideshow Bob looking vampire to go after all that, ruining a perfectly good piano. Edward decides to leave as a way to protect Bella, even though other vampires and werewolves, and Crips are lurking in the Washington forest. She soon becomes an adrenaline junkie that gets visions of Edward playing Smokey the Bear whenever she does dangerous stuff, leading her to hang out with Jacob (Shark Boy) and spend weeks working on a pair of motorcycles that they only ride for two minutes. Jacob cuts his hair, takes his shirt off, becomes and ass, and becomes a dog. Edward decides to kill himself (thank God) and it's up to Bella to stop the Liberace Vamp from getting pulled apart by Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning.

Did you get all that? The movie's as messy as that paragraph and even worse than its predecessor in the "lets make the tweenies swoon" department. Robert Pattinson's introduction in this film made me laugh out loud, being so damn ridiculous. It looks like a bad Abercrombie commercial complete with music. This is the happiest depressed vampire I've ever seen. And another thing: the next time I hear people complaining about William Shatner's acting, I want this guys name brought up. He pauses every two words. Bella....................................................do you.......................................................want............................................................black olives......................................................on your..................................................................sub? No wonder this movies over two hours! Could you imagine if this guy was in the film more than the small amount he appears (give me an AMEN!)? Kristen Stewart is a better actress than this garbage, but it's a steady job that will get great PR. Just don't pull a Mark Hamill, dear. We can't forget Taylor Launtner, who obviously has gone to the McConaughey school for acting which means you need to have your shirt off as much as possible- who cares if you act for shit? Even on a rainy day in Washington in February. What's better than that? Four guys with their shirts off. What's even better? Edward Pattinson showing off his Michael Jackson post-mortem physique near the end of the picture. I'm serious folks. It's like comparing me in 1996 to The Rock.

I could go another hour about the dialogue. It's hilarious. I have to applaud these actors and actresses because I don't know how they can say this shit with a straight face. The one redeeming thing about this movie was Michael Sheen as the Lestadt like head vampire that is always so damn happy. The reason he's got a smile on his face is because he can't believe that script either. He is actually very good in the movie, though he won't be noticed because he doesn't take his shirt off and have crappy metro sexual rock tunes playing in the background.

The film is too long by at least fifteen minutes, which could have been fixed by having Pattinson talk a little faster and cut the depressed looks of the cast down by about 50. There's also a storyline dealing with another vampire named Victoria that gets no real resolution and didn't need to be in there other than to pad the numbers. If the books are as badly paced as this movie its no wonder the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

But at the end of the day it doesn't matter what I think. Ladies between thirteen and 90 and their mothers, aunts, and sister will all flock to this movie and bring some poor schmuck of a guy with them to see the vomit that is being projected onto the screen. Just like Star Wars fans would flock to a movie with George Lucas wiping his ass with one hundred dollar bills for two hours as long as there's the big title sequence and a light saber, ladies will flock to this cess pool vampire soap opera as long as it has unkempt hair and topless child stars. Even more so than the first film, this is an example of a huge money making enterprise that has no redeeming value other than selling tickets, merchandise, and more books.

Two stars for kinda bad acting and not great script. Five stars for shirtless eye candy. Minus two stars for that ridiculous lipstick. I think that equals three?
  • November 23, 2009
Do you have to watch the first film to enjoy the second part? I would have thought so because there are storyline info that threads into this film, but you can enjoy it none the less. I think this will become succesful again when it is released on Blu Ray and DVD. More vampire fi...( read more)lms! Its a good second part. Waiting for the next sequal.

"You're my only reason to stay... alive. If that's what I am."

When Edward leaves Bella, her hole world is turned upside down. With Bella's heart broken, she turns to Jacob (Jake) her best friend to fill the void that was left by Edward. As Bella spends more time with Jak...( read more)e, she learns that there's more than vampires in the town of Forks.

    REVIEW

How many times can "I can't live without you" or its variant be said in a movie? Too many when it's New Moon, the new teen tease of the Twilight Saga. I get the idea that teens long for each other much more than adults do, making teens the horniest animals on the planet. Wait. Wait. "Animals": That's the big motif because were-wolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) substitutes for vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson), who is on vacation from Bella (Kristen Stewart). It's just another sexual frustration for her. This girl might stand a better chance in a nunnery. The slow teen romance has some of the worst dialogue this year. Bella says, for instance, "The absence of him is everywhere I look. It is like a big hole has been punched through my chest." While she says this, she gives her endlessly distracted look, the one that says how difficult life is for a teen with two wild hunks pursuing her.

When the teens are not mooning in the second half, there is some satisfactory action as Jacob and his shirtless boys turn into very big wolves. In fact, so many shirtless boys and no scantily-clad girls leave me to suspect a homo erotic sub theme. Do girls really want to date gay men?

Who would have thought vampires and were-wolves could be dull? When they're teens, that's when.

I've read a lot of reviews of New Moon since I watched it myself and one thing I've noticed is that the Twihards are divided over whether or not New Moon is better than the first Twilight movie. There are some that say it is close to the book and those that say not but, since I h...( read more)aven't read any of the saga novels myself, I have no opinion about that whatsoever.

Is New Moon better than the Twilight movie though? That's the problem because some of it is and some of it isn't. The romance, action and hotness of everybody involved has certainly improved this time round and it's starting to move right into "Interview with the Vampire" territory so that's no bad thing. But (and there's always a "but") the story still moves too slowly and there are too many characters to keep track of even if they only have minor roles compared to the big triumvirate of Bella, Edward and Jacob.

The story is much as before, i.e. Bella loves Edward and wants to be a vampire so that they can be together forever, Edward doesn't want to take Bella's humanity away, and so it goes on. This time though Edward leaves Bella because he wants her to be safe and so she drifts into the world of werewolves as Red Injun Jacob reveals his feelings for her during Edward's absence.

To tell you any more would spoil it for you but I have to say that the CGI werewolves weren't too bad considering that they are still CGI and fake as hell and that both Edward and Jacob spend a lot of time with their shirts off (which I'm sure will please a lot of little girls). Unfortunately Bella doesn't spend any time with her shirt off which would have certainly made New Moon 100 times more enjoyable for me.

Aesthetically the film looks really good and ithe camerawork is consistently better than in Twilight. There wasn't too much of a distracting soundtrack to this either with the music being quite minimal and unobtrusive. That works in New Moon's favour but perhaps not for future CD movie soundtrack sales. I only noticed two songs in the whole thing so where the rest of the album would come from I have no idea. I only mention that because I went to Burger King and got the little burgers with the free New Moon coupons with them and I know one of them was for money off the soundtrack CD. I won't be buying one anyway. (BTW the "Burger Shots" suck!)

I'll add more to my review later once you've all had chance to see New Moon for yourselves.

The bottom line is that I enjoyed it. I'd rate it as about 6 out of 10 (and half of that again if seen as a horror movie which it really isn't). I still think of the Twilight series as being the Dark Shadows of the 21st century.

New Moon offers few of the juicy, go-for-broke romantic pleasures of its predecessor, and the movie is so badly shaped that it's hard not to blame Weitz as a director. full review

I can't comment on the acting because I didn't catch Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner doing any. They basically primp and pose through the same humdrum motions they did before. full review

Weitz is more awkward than Hardwicke with the casual teenaged interactions. Melissa Rosenberg's dialogue hasn't improved, though she gets a boost by using quotes from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. full review

Taylor Lautner really makes the movie though. I'm pretty impressed and encourage everyone to see it, even people who weren't impressed with Twilight. Oh and the ending is really great as well :)
