Pinocchio meets Terminator in this well-animated, but rather mediocre CGI flick. You'd think a movie produced by a creative genius like Tim Burton would be really amazing, but it seems his contribution to this has been meagre in reality. An advertisting trick, to lure more people...( read more) into watching it. Because altough you can sense his influence visually, the script sadly leaves a lot to desire. The dialogue is bland and the characters pretty soulless (which is ironic indeed, as they're supposed to be an anti-thesis to the robots, with their human values and emotions). Consequently, it failed to engage me. Fairly entertaining on the whole, but ultimately quite forgettable.

Amazing animation, somewhat interesting story but they could have done more. Seemed more like a video game. Worth checking out on DVD

"9" is an ambitious film with extraordinary visuals that unfortunately just doesn't quite gel into a cohesive whole. The plot and characters are extremely thin and forgettable, but as a visual feast "9" excels. On that one strength alone, the film works just enough to be recommen...( read more)ded.

A visually charged meditation on religion, science, war, technology, and faith (as in faith in others and such). It's short, moves quickly, and the fact that sheer innocence and curiousity sets off the main plot is interesting. It's also telling that one of the major sequences he...( read more)re ends with a chruch burning down. This movie reminds me alot of The Golden Compass: Both films have plenty to say about blindly following religion, and how technology plays a role in the downfall of such, but here, there's more to it. Acker seems to believe that organized religion is crap, but belief in something, and trying to do the greater good is admirable. And that is where the problem comes in. His message gets muddled, and is not not clear. There's little plot, and the ending fight is a let down. Also, worst score in any movie all year.

although other animation may have been previous Bekmambetov and Burton had delivered an incredibly mastered CG film not to be discredited for it's behind the scenes talent

9 pieces of one's soul to save humanity. A simple concept and easy to grasp. Within the first 10 minutes the characters are introduced and the action starts. At first i thought it might be too short but no it's just right. A fast paced animation movie with the magic and why not e...( read more)ven suspense of Shane Acker, Tim Burton and Pamela Pettler (whoever she is). Great voices that bring to life this raggy shaggy mini puppets that make a difference in this post-apocaliptic world. The cgi is outstanding, and this whole thing pretty good written, not to mention it's one hell of an artistic movie but it lacks more.....something i dunno. Point is it's not one to be remembered by, but deffinitely worth the watch.

Looks really good. Very short and narrow.

    very good dark animation.
  • November 17, 2009
It was a pretty decent movie, not that crazy about it but it was okay..
I was actually expecting more from this movie since Tim Burton is involved in this movie...

Almost a horror movie for kids... a very cool, yet out-of-it movie.
  • November 17, 2009
It's a little dull throughout, but I give it points for being original in concept.
The characters are awkwardly adorable too.

9: Why do you listen to 1?
    #5: A group must have a leader.
9: But what if he's wrong?

Interesting way of saying: "What makes us human is our souls."
Has a nice touch when is comes to creativity and style.

Post-apocalyptic animated fairy-tale with a whole bag of Tim Burton-ness. Charming characters and cool monsters. Perfect voice actors. Nothing bad to say about this one as long as you know its a fairy-tale.
  • November 15, 2009
Pretty darn good. Had elements that could be found in Burton movies, post-apocolyptic action flicks, and stories of heroism. Awesome alround... very few offsetting segments. Enjoyable and visually stimulating.
  • November 14, 2009
Average flick with little emotional engagement inspired from me. Brilliant premise, but ultimately a largely dull and flat cartoon that takes itself very seriously. Unremarkable. Kept the kids happy.

Not as great as I thought it would be. I think 9 had a lot of potential to be an awesome movie, but the story seemed lacking. The details were rich, and the acting was good. 9 is pretty and extremely creative, but without the story, the movie falls short.

great animation, great idea. has that little bit of imagination and magic to it.
  • November 13, 2009
The story was kinda loosy, probably leaving some things inconclusive at the end. The beginning may have been a bit rushed when presenting the characters making the storyline short on depth and feel a bit awkward and foreign.
  • November 12, 2009
It's really difficult for me to rate tis movie other than it's a good animation. But the storyline threw me off guard, I viewed it abstract and foreign.
  • November 11, 2009
This movie freaked me out because I'm a very paranoid person who thinks technology will literally take over us one day. Though most plot elements from 9 have appeared in countless other movies, it manages to be refreshing thanks to its avan-garde animation (the serpent-like thing...( read more) scared the shit out of me!), characters you want to root for and action scenes that really get you worked up.

this is an awesome movie. aimed for more mature people but very interesting. makes you think about where we are heading with technology and if it could be possible.

La realizacion es de muy buena calidad pero la historia carece de impacto, pareciendote una miniserie que nunca viste como inicio y se desarrollo, de la cual viste solo los ultimos 4 episodios

    Totally undescribable...bizarre and off center
  • November 7, 2009
9 was a good movie. But it isn't something I would pay to go see. Storyline is easy to follow and predictable but the characters are interesting in their own way. After both Timur Bekmambetov and Tim Burton had a hand in producing this I was kinda expecting some far out fantasy with dark goth elements and neat action sequences but alas its the oppersite (well the action scenes are ok), the whole plot is a very over used story of machines o...( read more)vertaking the earth and killing everyone, oh and humans made them in the first place hmmm. So really you have a total mix of The Matrix, Terminator some Dark Crystal and many other films involving robots/machines gone wrong.
It certainly has an epic feel to it, the design and look is excellent with heavy metallic, grimy, rusty, dark colours and themes thick and fast, with a kind of techo, steam punk, industrial crossover with cute little smurf type heroes battling the evil machines..which unfortunately look like the machines from The Matrix.

You could also include a heavy WWII feel to this, the gritty propergander and hope sense to the human struggle via flashbacks and the fact that some machines look like giant Nazi trooper helmets on legs haha again films such as Mutant Chronicles and Sky Captain spring to mind.

Anyway apart from the heavy borrowings from other films its a reasonable flick, not really a kids film though despite the cgi, its pretty dark, brooding and bleak to be honest with quite afew hints at death thrown in. The main characters are pretty odd looking, they are just small sacks lets be honest, sewn together with clockwork bits inside haha unusual to say the least. Voice work is one of the better aspects with a great cast line up which really helps sell the doom n gloom but with the plot needing more explanation and time (its only about 1h 20min) you can't help but feel this could of been alot better, making it look abit more adult could of helped too.

A cult classic in the waiting maybe.

i as very disapointed by this movie..because it was very nice one the short film which came out years ago and i thought that by entering tim burton in the production along side the director of "Wanted" plus the director Shane Acker..i thought it will least be 4 stars...the plot w...( read more)as incomplete...the characters needed more devolpment and overall the ending was very easy to guess...I was disapointed and the 2.5 stars are because of the magical atmosphere and the best animator-effects i 've ever seen..the movements of the characters was incredible...

I come from the days of when I grew up watching Tim Burton, Don Bluth and Jim Henson- three of my cinema deities from my earliest memories- and this is the first time in a long time that anyone has managed to touch on that magic for me.

I'll do my best to convey what a fantas...( read more)tic movie this is, without really revealing too much of the plot- because I think that this movie is best experienced not really knowing anything. You come in the same way the main character does- not knowing anything of this world.

While sitting in the cinema, I recalled memories of the intensity and heart of "my fave family movies" such as E.T., The Secret of Nymh, American Tail, and Edward Scissorhands- movies that touched upon something that was at once so rooted in human emotion yet so fantastic and unimaginable. I can absolutely say that "9" is now considered one in that catalog of visionary and hallowed movies.

Guaranteed some will have a complaint with the length (a seemingly short 79 minutes considering the scale and impact of the story) but I think that a movie can be an epic without needing to be over 2 hours long, or a HUGE amount of unnecessary back story and origins that's only purpose is to make the story SEEM grandiose. This movie is a complete work of art- from the obviously eye-catching visual style and composition of what you see, down to the basic story and character development that you feel. In 79 minutes this team managed to harness my imagination and senses without having to dumb-it-down for the audience, or use any of the old gags that many bigger studios seem to rely on to sell tickets (thankfully there are NO cheesy gross out jokes to appeal to a typical cable-fed attention span). Instead they took me to places that I had never thought of, but will never forget. My most respectful nod to everyone involved.

Absolutely do not miss this one.

This is a simple yet charming tale of nine dolls left after the world ends. There's not much of a plot, though plenty of character and some real imagination (6 shows Burton's influence). It's definitely worth catching if only in the hope that Acker can now move on to other things.

I first heard about "9" like most people did, sitting a dark movie theater waiting for my movie to play. And as I was waiting a quaint and dark little trailer started to roll it showed a bombed out city and as I watched I became more and more intrigued at the premise of th...( read more)e film and the dark, Gothic style it infused with the brilliant and breathtaking animation. But I didn't see it it until about a month later and now I'm regretting not having seen it while it was in theaters, Shane Acker and Tim Burton's "9" is brilliant, heartbreaking, dark, intense, breathtaking and at sometimes scary.

"9" is not a movie I would show my three step-sisters, the reason is is that "9" is at sometimes very scary and is a little too dark and violent for the mainstream children audience of 5-9 but.The age group of 10-50 may enjoy this film much more than the younger seeing as it is aimed at the more adult and teenage audience. But with that said "9" is a sweeping animated epic that sucks you into a dystopia world and takes you on an adventure the likes you've never seen before, this film get's it's themes straight from the visionary minds of producer Tim Burton and Director Shane Acker they create a vision of a destroyed world and tell you a story of the nine little voodoo dolls that have to save civilization, It's quite a fascinating story and will surely entertain you while it blows your mind as well. Some people think this film doesn't deserve much acclaim or praise, but I'm sorry to say this film deserves every bit of the praise It something new and fresh and not kiddish at all but it does teach some great morals in it like friendship, overcoming your fear and rising to the occasion to be more than what you really are. All in all "9" is a fun, fantastic, action packed, dark and mythic Sci-Fi animated epic like no other.

Elijah wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, John C. Reilly, Christoper Plummer and Fred Tatasciore are all fantastic in this as the nine voodoo dolls tasked with stopping the deadly machines. They all bring something different to there characters. Elijah wood(9) brings a soft spoken and heroic prowess to his young character, and he makes 9 more of a hero than a coward he turns him into a leader that is small but has a big heart(metaphorically speaking.). Fred Tatsciore(you may know him as the man who voices Bruce Banner in The Ultimate Avengers.) Brings a strong but dim bulled wit to his character 8, his style and power is more driven toward brute force than brains seeing as 8 is the giant out of the nine, but none the less he brings a little likability to a rather not so likable character. Jennifer Connelly(7) Is tough, smart and strong, she is the second in command to 9, or that's how I see it. Connelly brings her toughness and power to an already impressive and imposing character. 7 is the strongest and the fighter out of the group, she is a force of nature and is not to be taken lightly. Crispin Glover(6) brings a quirky and Tim Burton type charm to this film as the lovable and misunderstood painter of the group, he's fantastic in the scenes he's in and he really brings the kindness and gentle quality to this film. John C. Reilly(5) plays the very friendly and caring 5, hr brings more than what is needed and that is alright because that humanizes the film and brings out of the extreme darkness set by the films story. while the twins 3 and 4 don't say anything they are very sweet and timid characters and are great to have on screen. Martin Landau(2) is the old quirk out of them. And while he may not have much screen time h e does do good at bringing a friendly and smart quality to his character. Christopher Plummer(1) Is the crass, cowardly and not so great leader of the nine. His character believes in hiding instead of learning the truth behind what has happened to the world around them and fighting back, but none the less Plummer does great with his character and brings great power to him. But all in all the cast does a fantastic job n this film and really elevates it to true greatness among the animated films.

"9" Is fantastic in every way imaginable and may not be very suitable for small children but anyone with a love of Tim Burton and his dark world will enjoy this film as much as I did. It's a fun filled Science Fiction epic that has ushered the way for more mature animated films and the breathtaking CGI effects and action sequences are more well worth the price of rental or admission. All in all "9" delivers.

I'd not really looked into this film alot apart from a few trailers and it didn't really look that interesting but people kept saying it looked good. Went to see it anyway.
The animation was really good, the humans looked crappy but everything else looked great and it was all dar...( read more)k and gritty. I first thought it was a kids film but when the 12A appeared on the screen before it started I was wondering what was going to happen in it to make it that rating.
The film was alright although it was very weak on plot and which direction they wanted it to head in. Also there were so many main characters to keep track of it got confusing (11 of them I think). Also the fact that all 9 of the sack people things were numbered made it hard to remember who was who as when they spoke about so and so you had to try and think which one it was. It doesn't make clear what the whole point of the movie is until right the very end and even then it's slightly disappointing. The whole film feels like it's not moving forward and doesn't really involve you in the film.
It was alright but nothing fantastic.
    6/10
